Heritage Trail Project - Current Status

The Bedford Heritage Trail is the first phase of plan to link the Bedford Springs Resort, Ft. Bedford Park, and Old Bedford Village with a pedestrian/bicycle oriented trail. We expect this linkage to assist all three locales. Until we complete the larger project, the Bedford Heritage Trail invites visitors to explore historic buildings and places in the downtown Bedford area either by walking or biking a 1.3 mile loop. The trail will use the Ft. Bedford flag emblem on signs and sidewalk markings for visitors to follow.

Recent Developments

The Bedford Borough/Bedford Township Joint Municipal Authority is working on the next phase of the trail project, which is a link between Fort Bedford Park in the Borough, and the Omni Bedford Springs Resort in the Township. On December 11, 2010, the Authority held a Santa Run, Walk, Roll event to raise funds for, and awareness of, the project. The next step is to involve the public and major landowners in the conduct of a study to identify and describe the pros and cons of the possible routes the trail may take, and develop a cost estimate for engineering and construction.

Donations in support of the trail are welcome. Please send to Downtown Bedford Inc., P.O. Box 286, Bedford, PA 15522.

Anyone interested in helping improve and/or extend the trail can contact Jim Wehling, Wehlingj@embarqmail.com, or at 814-623-9336.

DBI People for Parks

Our mission is to work together to provide valuable recreational resources for all children, adults, and families who reside and visit here.

Our first priority is to build a new playground at The Green in Bedford Borough. In that regard, we need votes for the Pepsi challenge before January 31, 2011! Pepsi gives $50,000 grants to the community that garners the most votes for their project. It is called the Pepsi Refresh Everything challenge. You may vote by registering with Pepsi, through Facebook or by texting 105314 to Pepsi, 73774. You may vote once a day at www.refresheverything.com/peopleforparks and once a day by text message. Please see Bedford People for Parks Facebook page for more information.

We will continue to serve the community by helping with maintenance and upkeep of the new parks as well as assisting with additional park initiatives.

We look forward to working with the citizens, businesses and organizations of Bedford and the surrounding areas to make Parks Better for People!

The DBI Heritage Committee is working toward their goal of reconstructing the fort at its original location near the Richard Street Bridge. We have applied for and received a $15,000. grant to help defray some of the cost and plan to apply for more money as the project moves along.
